  •   Class 66 / Class 77

  •   BR98.10

    Deutsche Bundesbahn

All 45 98.10 locomotives were recovered after 1945 by the Deutsche Bundesbahn, and continued to be used exclusively in their native Bavaria. Though the locomotives were initially indispensable, they were put out to pasture after the advent of the "Roter Brummer" rail bus, especially those used in passenger train service. Many of the locomotives were still used after this time, in freight service especially. DB did not make any more major changes or improvements; in the late 50s, they added a third headlight. If the coal bin or the water tanks had to be replaced due to corrosion, the new parts frequently arose from welding technology. In 1950 the locomotives were distributed to the three directorates of Munich, Augsburg and Regensburg. The great majority of the locomotives were headquartered at ED (railway district management) Regensburg, which took in 28 units as their own. There was also 98 1041, which served the Schwandorf depot. In 1953 it joined five other 98.10 locomotives in the Straubing depot, from which they mainly ran freight trains to Cham and Neufahrn. The performance logs of a sister locomotive from this period report daily mileages between 55 km and 159 km. 13 tons of coal were consumed for every 1000 km. The 98 1041 was decommissioned in 1961 and sold for scrap. Few sister locomotives were older. The last one was 98 1005 of the Schwandorf depot, which was decommissioned in 1966. Unfortunately, none of the modern Bavarian Vizinalbahn locomotives exist today.

  •   BR261

After Millenium the German State Railway (DB) need to order new locos to replace old fashioned shunting locos of Classes 362 - 365 (former BR V60) and 290 - 295 (former BR V90). The German Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik GmbH & Co KG developed the BR261 diesel locomotive. The prime mover of version 10BB is MTU 8V 4000 R42 and develops 1000 kW at 1800 rpm. With a maximum speed of 100 km/h and a tractive power of 258 kN the BR261 is used in heavy shunting service as well as for mid range freight service on main and branch lines. DB ordered 130 locos, but manufacturer Voith assembled some more locos to use in German leasing fleets. Because of different equipment concerning emission standard the class had been splitted into BR 260 and 261.

  •   BR210

In 1970 the German DB built eight four axle diesel locomotives class 210 for heavy passenger service. The locos base on famous dieselhydraulic V160 series and reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The 210 had a MTU MA 12 V 956 TB 10 traction diesel motor and a separately shifted Avco Lycoming licensed gas turbine T 53-L 13. After two heavy defectives DB decided in 1978 to dismount the gas turbines. Till 2006 the locos were used as standard 218 and with the numbers 218 901-908.

  •   BR130, BR131, BR132DR, BR232

In the late 1960s the railway of the German Democratic Republic (DR) ordered successors for their V200 class. The new class should have an electric heating to pull also passenger trains. The first two series (class 130 and 131) did not have a heating equipment yet. In 1973 the first of 709 samples of the electric heater equipped 132 class had been delivered to the DR. The externally quite similar 130/131/132 had a diesel electric drive and a 3000 HP 16 cylinder 4 stroke prime mover 16 Tsch N26/26 5 D 49 from Russian Kolomna plant. In 1977 the DR added six 4000 HP units called class 142 that based on the 132. In the 1990s after the DR and the western German DB merged the 130 and 131 were scrapped or sold and many of the now called BR 232 (ex 132) had been equipped with new vents to lower the noise. Some received new Kolomna motors, too and were named BR 233. Some of the 232 are still in freight service at the DB. Many of the 130/131/142 are in use of private railways. The whole loco family is known under the nickname Ludmilla in Germany.

  •   BR119 DR - M820

The BR 119 (since 1990 BR 219) had been developed by Rumanian manufacturer „Lokomotivfabrik 23. August“ Bukarest as two motor diesel locomotive for the GDR state railway DR . The two traction motors delivered 1350 HP at 1500 rpm each and enabled the loco to reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h. For the use also on branch lines the six axle loco has a load per axle of 16 tons only. As the motors had been unreliable, the DR interchanged them with turbo charged 12 KVD motors of V180/BR 118 in the early 1980s.
